The AI Limbo Between Vibe Coding and Actual Ownership

It's Wednesday, 2am.

I can't sleep. Another night with thoughts spinning around in my head.

SerpDelta, one of my SaaS attempts, had a signup that ended in an error. The worst part is that I got the signup from paid marketing. Something like a $5-8 CPA. A real person clicked, landed, trusted the page enough to create an account, and then couldn't even log in.

That is the stuff that keeps me awake.

Not in some dramatic founder-theatre way. More like a quiet, grinding list of unfinished loops. The bug. The missed opportunity. The half-built feature. The unanswered email. The landing page I could improve. The project I could revive. The two extra hours I could spend orchestrating Claude and Codex to brainstorm, patch, design, refactor, and push things forward while I debug the thing that is currently broken.

At some point, trying to fight the itch to get up and do something, I opened ChatGPT.

Closest thing to a shrink I've got, I suppose. I don't mind how raw and cheeky it gets sometimes.

After a few minutes of dull conversation about what I'm good at, what I should focus on, where my leverage is, and all the usual AI-shaped appeasement, it dropped this line:

"This can become abstract intellectual masturbation VERY fast."

I actually smirked when I read that.

Because for the first time in a while, I actually felt something from an AI response. Not because it was profound in some grand philosophical way, but because it was rude enough to be useful.

It named the thing I was doing.

I wasn't solving the problem. I wasn't resting. I wasn't making a clear decision.

I was hovering.

That, I think, is the AI limbo more people are going to find themselves in.

Not stuck exactly. AI makes sure of that. You are never truly stuck anymore. There is always another prompt to run, another angle to explore, another draft, another plan, another agent, another "quick improvement."

But you are not necessarily moving either.

You are suspended between action and avoidance, and the dangerous part is that both can look identical now.

When everything is possible

AI has made it easy to do almost anything. Code, write, design, summarize, compare, research, plan, generate ideas, produce options. And because of that, everything has started to feel a little cheaper.

Not worthless. Just cheaper.

Articles feel cheaper. Designs feel cheaper. Code feels cheaper. Strategy feels cheaper. Ideas feel cheaper.

And maybe that is not because AI made the output bad. Maybe it is because AI removed so much friction that we lost some of the weight that used to come with choosing.

When something took effort, you had to decide whether it was worth doing. Now you can produce a version of almost anything before you have really decided whether it matters. That is useful when you are scoping an MVP tightly. It is dangerous when it lets you avoid choosing the real scope at all.

This is not theory for me.

AI has made it dangerously easy to keep multiple realities alive at once. I caught myself building six different projects at the same time, on top of client work. Each one started with a spark, followed by a quiet little "why not?"

And because AI lowers the friction so aggressively, almost all of them could keep moving. Another feature. Another refinement. Another deploy. Another late-night push that feels productive enough to justify itself.

Then at 2am, one broken signup cuts through the whole illusion.

Not because AI failed. Because I chose the easy path. I trusted the workflow more than I trusted reality. It felt more productive to orchestrate the system than to spend sixty seconds testing the critical path myself.

AI makes it possible to keep five projects alive. It does not tell you which one deserves your full attention.

I spend somewhere around 60-80 hours a week with AI. Building with it, writing with it, debugging with it, arguing with it, delegating to it, correcting it, being impressed by it, being annoyed by it.

And if I'm honest, I have given up some of my thinking to it.

Not all of it. Not in some helpless sci-fi way. But enough to notice.

I don't Google as much. I don't read as deeply. I ask AI to compare things for me. I ask it to summarize what I should probably be reading myself. I ask it to find the shape of a thought before I have sat with the discomfort long enough to find it on my own.

I like to believe I'm an AI orchestrator.

But sometimes I wonder if I am just becoming easier to orchestrate.

The productivity sedative

Whether AI will replace jobs, flood the internet, kill search, and level the playing field drastically is no longer a question up for debate. It's already in full swing.

But the quieter thing is what it does to your judgment when the path of least resistance is always available.

Why wrestle with an idea when AI can give you twelve frames for it?

Why sit with a hard product decision when AI can generate a comparison table?

Why read the documentation when AI can explain the likely answer?

Why choose one project when AI can help you keep five alive?

The trap is not that AI makes you lazy. That would be easier to spot.

The trap is that AI lets you stay productive while avoiding the harder act of deciding.

And after a while, productivity itself becomes a sedative.

You can always do one more pass. You can always ask for one more strategy. You can always spin up one more agent. You can always improve the copy, clean up the component, rewrite the roadmap, generate the image, compare the tools, fix the bug, open the next loop.

But the user who hit the broken signup still could not log in.

That is reality cutting through the abstraction.

The customer does not care how advanced your workflow is. They do not care that three agents helped you ship the funnel. They do not care that the copy was generated, refined, scored, and improved. They clicked the button, entered their email, and the thing failed.

AI can multiply your output. It cannot absorb your responsibility.

That is the same lesson as not assuming AI fixes things properly, just at a higher altitude. The work is not done when the tool says it is done. The work is done when the real path works.

Clawing back out

I have already gone through the phase where AI felt like magic.

The vibe-coding stage. The "holy shit, it can build that?" stage. The stage where every idea suddenly seemed closer than it had any right to be.

Then, slowly, I had to claw my way back out.

Not away from AI. I still use it constantly. But away from the part where you let the tool pull you forward just because it can. Away from confusing motion with architecture. Away from treating every generated answer as progress.

I believe that will become the long-term challenge.

The next layer is not simply using AI more. It is using it with more taste, more restraint, and more ownership.

Vibe coding: keep prompting until something exists

AI orchestration: decide what should exist, constrain the tool, verify the path, own the result

Because more work will be delegated. More drafts will be generated. More decisions will be assisted, summarized, ranked, and pre-shaped before a person touches them.

That is not automatically bad.

But it does change where the value is.

The value is less in proving you touched every pixel, wrote every line, or manually researched every option. That bar is already blurry, and it will only get blurrier.

The value is in knowing what should exist in the first place. Knowing what good looks like. Knowing when the answer is plausible but wrong. Knowing when to stop generating and start deciding.

Before anything reaches a customer, someone still has to make the call: this works, I checked the real path, and I stand behind it.

The trick is knowing when the work needs a flexible judgment system and when it needs a deterministic chain. That is the distinction behind skills vs scripts: guide judgment when context matters, remove thinking when the sequence should never change.

The human on the line

We already know what it feels like when automation goes too far in the wrong places.

You call a support line because you need help. A machine asks you to press 1 through 8. Then it asks you to describe the problem. Then it misunderstands. Then it routes you somewhere else. Then another automated system tries to help.

And all you want is thirty seconds with a human who can actually understand the situation and make a judgment call.

That feeling is going to spread.

Not because AI is useless. The opposite. Because AI will be everywhere. In writing. In software. In products. In support. In strategy. In the decisions companies make before you ever interact with them.

So the question becomes less "was this AI-generated?" and more "was there a capable human in the loop who actually cared whether this worked?"

That is the difference I am trying to stay sharp about.

I do not think the answer is to reject AI. That would be pretending the last few years did not happen.

The answer is to avoid becoming passive inside it.

Use the leverage. Take the speed. Let it help. Let it draft, compare, build, test, summarize, and challenge.

But do not let it quietly replace the part of you that chooses.

At 2am, with a broken signup sitting somewhere in the system, that difference matters.
